چکیده

We model the 10 µm absorption spectra of nonspherical particles composed of amorphous silicate. We consider two classes of particles, compact ones and fractal aggregates composed of homogeneous spheres. For the compact particles we consider Gaussian random spheres with various degrees of non-sphericity. For the fractal aggregates we compute the absorption spectra for various fractal dimensions. The 10 µm spectra are computed for ensembles of these particles in random orientation using the well-known Discrete Dipole Approximation. We compare our results to spectra obtained when using volume equivalent homogeneous spheres and to those computed using a porous sphere approximation. We conclude that, in general, nonspherical particles show a spectral signature that is similar to that of homogeneous spheres with a smaller material volume. This effect is overestimated when approximating the particles by porous spheres with the same volume filling fraction. For aggregates with fractal dimensions typically predicted for cosmic dust, we show that the spectral signature characteristic of very small homogeneous spheres (with a volume equivalent radius r V 0.5 µm) can be detected even in very large particles. We conclude that particle sizes are underestimated when using homogeneous spheres to model the emission spectra of astronomical sources. In contrast, the particle sizes are severely overestimated when using equivalent porous spheres to fit observations of 10 µm silicate emission.

Applying SEM-EDX and XRD Techniques to Demonstrate the Overgrowth of Atmospheric Soot and Its Coalescence with Crystal Silicate Particles in Delhi

Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) systems were used to demonstrate the overgrowth of soot to fractal like structure and its subsequent coalescence with crystal shaped silicate particles. Sample was obtained from a very clean area of Delhi at a height of 16 m from ground with the help of a five stage cascade impactor in the winter...

Is the silicate emission feature only influenced by grain size ?

The flattening of the 10 µm silicate emission feature observed in the spectra of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars is usually interpreted as an indicator of grain growth. We show in this paper that a similar behaviour of the feature shape occurs when the porosity of composite grains varies. We modelled the fluffy aggregates with inclusions of different sizes with multi-layered spheres consisting o...

Pedotransfer functions for estimating soil moisture content using fractal parameters in Ardabil province

Extended abstract 1- Introduction Soil moisture curve is an important characteristic of soil and its measurement is necessary for determining soil available water content for plant, evapotranspiration and irrigation planning. Direct measurements of soil moisture coefficients are time-consuming and costly. But it is possible to estimate these characteristics from readily available soil propert...

A comet dust model for the β Pictoris disk

The 10μm silicate emission feature and the continuum emission from near infrared to millimeter of the dust in the disk of β Pictoris may be derived by assuming that the dust is continually replenished by comets orbiting close to the star. The basic, initial dust shed by the comets is taken to be the fluffy aggregates of interstellar silicate core-organic refractory mantle dust grains (with an a...

Effect of temperature and activator molar of Na2O to SiO2 in the process of synthesis and microstructure of cement geopolymer

Inorganic polymers were synthesized from dehydroxylated aluminosilicate clay (metakaolinite) condensed with sodium silicate in a highly alkaline environment. The thermal treatment of aluminosilicate materials causes changes in their structure with an increase in the amorphous phase. For that kind of structural change XRD analysis is not appropriate, so those changes are currently assessed by in...
